While it is badass when any dog gets adopted, most people tend to set their sights on the younger canines as they walk through shelters. There are plenty of wonderful, loving senior animals that also deserve the right forever home, though, especially in no-kill shelters like those associated with Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. There are so many great reasons to think about adopting an older pet and we are going to tell you about a few of them below:

Senior Dogs Are Often Calmer than Younger Dogs

Most dogs only have to reach the age of 7 to be considered “senior.”  Although a lot of them have many happy and healthy years left, they do tend to slow down a bit by the time they reach the senior stage. These dogs are well past their puppy years and are pretty settled into their permanent personalities. Without huge bouts of puppy energy, they are less likely to chew, scratch, or tear up things in your home.

Older dogs have also usually received some kind of training and are far more likely to respond well to commands. Many of them are house trained and know how to walk on a leash. With minimal training on your part, a senior dog can seamlessly transition into life in your home.

Senior Dogs Appreciate Your Love

Spending time in a shelter can be extremely frightening for senior dogs. Many of them have spent their whole lives with families and were taken to the shelter because of unforeseen circumstances and not because of behavioral issues. Animals that are used to living with families are extremely grateful and loving when they get adopted. While younger dogs might have a little bit of trouble getting used to life with a new family, many senior dogs immediately fit into your home, your life, and your heart.

Senior Dogs Are Often in Good Health

While there are some exceptions, many senior dogs are in fairly good health when they are surrendered to a shelter. With regular pet wellness exams from your trusted veterinarian like All Creatures Veterinary Hospital of Brooklyn, they can make a healthy and happy addition to your family.  Since they will not grow anymore, you can be sure the dog will stay the same size when you get them home and require similar veterinary care for the rest of their lives.

When the time comes to add a new furry friend to your home, turn to Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue to find the perfect addition to your family. We have rescued more than 1700 dogs from high-kill shelters in the south since 2011. It is our mission to find the right loving homes for each dog we rescue.
